Viana do Castelo, located near the mouth of the river Lima, is the capital of the district of Viana do Castelo in the northwest of Portugal, and of the region of Alto Minho.
Viana is also known as the "Princess of Lima", a reference to the river with the same name, a charming title for this lovely city. It's coast line has some of the most beautiful beaches in the north of Portugal, and is now part of the portuguese "Parque Natural do Litoral Norte", a protected natural area along the coast line from Esposende in the south to Caminha and the mouth of the river Minho, near Spain.
The city was founded in 1253 with the name of Viana. In the 16th century its port gained great importance as the one of the main ports from which Portuguese explorers set sail due to the discoveries. The most remarkable buildings in the historical town center are from this era. Its traditional folklore is among the richest in the country.
Viana has a marina for leisure boats and yachts. It also has a seaport with naval construction and repairing facilities. Its major industry is naval construction. Its shipyard is the only one still working in Portugal.
Near Viana do Castelo, 28 Km away, you can find Ponte de Lima, an historical portuguese village. Axis Group has a Golf Resort in Ponte de Lima for the golf lovers.
A little further, the biggest Natural Park of Portugal, the "National Park Peneda Geres". It covers an area of 72,000 hectares and has an extraordinary diversity of climate, environments and scenery, comprising the transition zone between the Mediterranean and Euro-Siberian regions.
Throughout the year, across the Minho region, occur several popular religious festivals and fairs. The festivities culminate in Viana do Castelo in mid-August, with the celebration of the “Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia”.
These days, the streets are filled with people watching the procession of allegorical floats, “cabeçudos” (big heads) and colorful local costumes, accompanied by traditional music and cuisine.
Along the Minho river, which separates Spain from Portugal, are picturesque border towns of Valência, Monção, Melgaço e Caminha.
